Creating a budget

Approved theme funds are structured within a cost frame. All means are administered by the Pufendorf IAS and any money that is not utilised during the agreed upon time period will revert to the Institute and used in new projects.

You are encouraged to use the following Excel template (Swedish only) for the calculation of salary costs (including the holiday recompense and a standardized percentage sum, in contrast to employer’s contribution or “LPK – lönekostnadspålägg” the former must be included in the calculation). No value is to be entered in the space for overhead costs.

What does the budget include?
A “Theme for young PhDs” may apply for funding up to and including 700 000 SEK. The budget accompanying the application must contain the planned salary costs of theme members. A separate specification of additional costs, such as workshops, seminars and a final symposium may also be attached but will not be included within the cost frame of an approved application. Separate negotiations with the Institute regarding this will be held before the work commences.

What is not included in the budget?
Overhead costs are not to be included when salary costs are calculated. The Pufendorf IAS will cover costs for the facilities, maintenance, administration etc., but not within the cost frame approved for the theme. Overhead costs are separate and will be added on top of the budget. The actual value of the theme funding is thus higher than the sum of the budget.

Guest researcher costs are not to be included in the budget application for the theme. The theme for young PhDs will have the opportunity, after careful planning with the Institute, to invite international guest researchers, up to three for a stay of 1-2 weeks.

Additional costs, such as seminars and workshops, may be specified in the application but are not included in the cost frame approved together with the application. These are instead negotiated with the Institution upon receipt of a successful application. The Institute presumes the application of external funding for any activity associated with high costs.
