The Pufendorf IAS Board

The Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies believes that the best decisions come from blending fresh perspectives with institutional memory. That’s why the institute doesn't replace its entire board at once.

Board members are appointed by the Lund University Vice Chancellor for three-year terms, with the possibility of serving an additional three years. This December, the institute expressed warm thanks to three departing members – Cecilia Lundberg, Susanne Lundin, and Fredrik N. G. Andersson – for their dedicated, enthusiastic contributions to Pufendorf IAS over the years.

Then, as January came to a close, three new members stepped in. And they didn’t get a gentle introduction: the January board meeting is when the group decides which Theme applications move forward to external review. This year, the number of applications was unusually high – a welcome sign of strong interest, even if it meant a hefty first assignment for the newcomers on the board. Out of 24 applications, 8 have now advanced to external review. The final decision on which Themes will start in September 2026 will be taken by the board in March.

Meet the New Board Members

Johan Östling

Professor of History, Director of the Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge (LUCK), Wallenberg Academy Fellow
Östling’s research centers on the history of knowledge and universities, paired with a broader curiosity about the intellectual, political, and cultural history of modern and contemporary Europe.

Jessica Abbott

Professor of Biology, Head of the Department of Biology
Abbott investigates the evolutionary genetics of sex differences, with a particular focus on sexually antagonistic genetic variation – situations where the same gene benefits one sex while disadvantaging the other. These patterns may help unlock one of evolutionary biology’s classic puzzles: why genetic variation persists over time.

Jessica's spontaneous reaction after the first board meeting:

After participating in one theme and two ASGs at the Pufendorf Institute, I am excited about being able to contribute from 'the other side'.

Per Becker

Professor of Risk and Sustainability; Professor in Leadership and Command & Control at the Swedish Defence University
Becker studies the complex interactions between the physical environment, social organisation, and social behaviour in the context of societal safety and sustainability. His work looks especially at resilience, governance, collaboration, and capability.
