Ancient Synagogues and the Human Sensorium: How Digital and Experiential Methods Can Transform Our Understanding of the Sights, Sounds, Smells, and Textures of Early Jewish History – Theme, Pufendorf IAS - Lund University

The goals for the Theme ++ are: 

1. To co-write a scientific article that develops an interdisciplinary approach to sensoriality in the study of cultural heritage sites, with a focus on ancient religious buildings. The article will examine epistemic cultures, theoretical frameworks, and methodological problems related to digital modeling, using the Theme’s work at the Ostia synagogue in Spring 2025 as its case study. 
2. To co-write a large grant application that will allow us to continue working with the Ostia synagogue and related sites and to expand the project’s scale to an interdisciplinary study of sensoriality and ritual performance in early Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

The goals for the Theme ++ are: 

1. Write one academic article on self-administered consumer neurotechnologies operating at the intersection of health-related claims, scientific uncertainty, user vulnerability, and fragmented regulation (current gap in research).
2. Improve applications written under the Theme period and resubmit for 2027 Swedish funding agencies during their spring (2027) calls.
3. Write research project grant applications for other funding agencies with the aim to examine consumer neurotechnologies used for self-treatment as an emerging phenomenon located between wellness markets and healthcare.
4. Explore future ERC and Horizon Europe Consortium possibilities: objective, scope, methods, partners.
