Synthetic biology and society: legal and political challenges

Welcome to a workshop organised by the Theme Synthetic Biology (Synbio@LU) at the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies at Lund University.
The Pufendorf IAS Theme Synthetic Biology has a focus on analyzing the potential of synthetic biology for mitigating climate crisis by developing biological systems for production of energy, chemicals, materials, and food. Research and innovation in synthetic biology promptly gives rise to questions on biosafety, biosecurity, intellectual property, but also to questions on governance and public acceptance of emerging technologies. The aim of the workshop is to have an open discussion to highlight political and legal issues related to large-scale implementation and acceptance of synthetic biology and engineering of microorganisms.
In this workshop participants will share their specific research and findings by reference to the following broader themes:
- Consideration of divergent values in governance processes regarding the development of new policies and legislation
- Normative choices concerning selection and relative weight of societal values
- Developing or adapting regulatory and governance frameworks and tools to implement policy in all phases of innovation and technology implementation
The workshop will be held online and directed to researchers and students. It is also open to interested members of the public.
