NordIAS fellow exchange programme
- and more opportunities within or via NordIAS
The NordIAS fellow exchange programme aims to promote networking and strengthen academic dialogue between participating institutes and researchers. For the individual researchers, the programme offers opportunities for short, "hassle free", sabbaticals.
The NordIAS fellow exchange programme is an opportunity for researchers at one of the eight Institutes for Advanced Studies within NordIAS to stay and work for one to three weeks at another "sister" Institute. The opportunity is announced during the autumn semester for visits the following year.
The researchers at the Nordic IASs are often international researchers invited for year-long stays, some even for up to three years. The Pufendorf IAS is different in how research groups are put together. As all members of Themegroups are are comitted to spend one day a week at the Institute during their the duration of a Theme, their precence at Lund University is indispensable. Research visits elsewhere cannot be catered for within the framework of a Theme.
We welcome current fellows within the NordIAS network to visit us, but cannot offer our own current researchers to participate in the programme. However, we see that our recent alumni would greatly benefit from the exchange, as would the host institutions, which is why the opportunity is being offered to them.
Before applying, researchers are encouraged to search for potential collaboration partners and/or relevant activities at the host institute. Some of them also have this as a requirement (which will be stated in the current call). In cases where Pufendorf IAS hosts researchers from other institutes, we do not require collaboration with ongoing Themes. Instead, we ask that they establish contact for collaboration with researchers active somewhere at Lund University.
Call for 2027 will be announced during autumn 2026
What it is
The Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies have formed the network NordIAS with the aim of increasing collaborations among the institutes and affiliated fellows and staff. The NordIAS visiting fellowship programme is intended to enhance the academic dialogue and network both for the fellows participating and for the institutes at large. The NordIAS visiting fellowship programme is relevant for you if you see added academic value both for you as a fellow and for the receiving institute in doing a visiting fellowship for 1-3 weeks as part of your existing fellowship. Before you apply, you are required to seek out potential collaborators and/or activities of relevance at the receiving institute.
Eligibility
All fellows at all the eight institutes are welcome to apply for a visiting fellowship at one of the other institutes. To be eligible, you must have an active fellowship at the home institute at the time of the desired visit. Note! The Pufendorf IAS is an exception to this rule; we accept applications from members of the alumni network who were members of a Pufendorf Theme in 2024-2025 and are employed at Lund University during the planned stay.
It is also possible for 3–6 fellows (depending on the hosting institution) to form a group and apply for a group fellowship. Group members can come from the same or different NordIAS institutes. Some hosting institutes allow wider collaboration with local or national scholars who may be included as group members as well. Please see the list below for more information.
Period and duration of visit
The visiting fellowship can be of 1 to 3 weeks. The timeframe for the visits will be coordinated with the hosting institute and timeslots must be proposed in the application. The institutes have marked in the list at the end of the call which periods they accept visits.
Travel and accommodation
The fellow’s home institute will cover travel costs and accommodation for the duration of the visit. It is the visiting fellow’s responsibility to find adequate housing and make arrangements with their home institute for the reimbursement/funding of the costs. Length of visit and type of accommodation must, therefore, be cleared with your home institute.
The visiting fellowship includes
The receiving institute will provide an office space for the duration of the visit and will include the visiting fellow in all relevant academic and social activities.
Deliverable and outcome
It is expected that the visiting fellow will actively participate in the activities at the receiving institute during the fellowship. After each visit, the visiting fellow must submit a short evaluation of the visit and the outcome of the visit to the home institute. The evaluation will be shared with the receiving institute.
Application
The application must include a completed application form providing the following information: the name of the applicant, current institute, fellowship period at the current institute, research field and project title, desired institutes to visit (with a prioritization of up to three), desired dates and duration of the visit, potential collaborators at the receiving institute(s), the purpose of the visit, and the applicant’s expected contribution to the visiting institute. A short CV and a letter of support from collaborator(s) must be submitted as attachments to the application form to the home institute.
