International Fellows Programme

The programme supports international participation within the Institute's Themes.

With the programme we strengthen our Themes' expertise and lay foundations for new research networks. For international researchers it is a unique opportunity to be part of a Theme and the development of new ideas for future research.

What is the International Fellows Programme?

The programme is designed to allow Themes to include international experts and perspectives in their collaboration. The programme has been in place since the start of the Pufendorf IAS in 2009 ans is made possible thanks to the LMK Foundation, a foundation supporting multifaceted and integrative research. The programme has changed and evolved with the Institute but is at its core essentially the same, offering added value to Themes, Lund University and to Fellows' continued progress.

Who is it for and how does it work?

The international Fellows programme is exclusive to international researchers with specific expertise related to a Theme. Invitations are made following nominations by Themes. Not all Themes choose to nominate fellows whereas some Themes may nominate as many as three.

The Institute can invite Fellows for stays between 2 – 6 months during the academic year, depending on the different set-ups or needs of the Themes. The Institute will tailor-make each visit according to the Themes and Fellows' requests.

What are the requirements for an international Fellow?

An invited fellow must be a researcher established abroad. Their main scientific achievements must have been earned at institutes for higher education outside of Sweden. Fellows do not have to have any previous experience of interdisciplinary work. Invited fellows must commit to staying in Lund and working at the Institute for at least two months in total.

What do we ask of fellows?

The three principles of the Pufendorf IAS model apply to the expectations of fellows and Theme members alike. In short, the Pufendorf IAS participation require an open mind, willingness to learn from others and likewise share with peers on an equal basis. Physical meetings on site are mandatory while the Institute refrain from asking for any deliverables such as ”publishable research results”. Themes meet regularly one day a week and this full day is completely committed to Theme-work. The Institute expects Fellows to fully engage and participate in these meetings. Additional expectations connected to Theme activities are agreed upon by fellows and their respective Themes.

What do we offer fellows?

Fellows will have a workplace at the Pufendorf IAS and receive practical help from the Pufendorf IAS staff. The Institute will reimburse salary costs for the duration of the agreed upon stays. Salary costs offered will be according to Lund University standards and contracts will be made between head of departments at respective institutions of higher learning. Stays will be considered as fulltime commitments. However, fellows may expect to have a good deal of time to work on other projects while committed to the Theme.

Travel and accommodation will be taken care of by the Pufendorf IAS. The Institute has its own guesthouse on its premises. Fellows get to stay either here or at an apartment hotel.

Once a fellow always a fellow

Over the years we have seen many international networks within numerous fields of research emerge as a result of Themes. It is not unusual that fellows revisit the University after a Theme has ended. It is always exciting to catch up when they come over for a coffee or join one of our events.  When in Lund, former fellows are welcome back to the Pufendorf IAS for a place to work. To be able to provide a "home" for researchers from all over the world this way, is a great privilege to us.
