Next Generation Healthscapes

THEME 2025-2026

Hospitals worldwide are aging, and with them, the models are used to design and evaluate healthcare spaces. New construction often emphasizes cost-effectiveness and technical outcomes. But how about the human aspects of care?

Drawing on expertise from medicine, medical humanities, social sciences, engineering, healthcare architecture, and the arts, the Theme aims to create integrated models that support well-being, adaptability and sustainability. This work offers a vision for more compassionate, inclusive, and resilient healthcare environments built to meet the needs of tomorrow.

The Theme introduces the concept of healthscapes, a new way of thinking about healthcare infrastructure that includes emotional, social, and relational dimensions. How do design, layout, and environment shape the experiences of patients (and their families) and staff? How do new actors – like digital services, robots, and caregivers – fit into future care models?
