Pufendorf IAS Fellow lecture: Everything I have learned about presence, I have learned from playing Quake III Arena
Welcome to an open Pufendorf IAS Fellow lecture with Mark Grimshaw-Aagaard, professor of music at Aalborg University in Denmark, and member of the Pufendorf IAS Theme Sound of Democracy.
Abstract
First-person shooter computer games, and other first-person perspective virtual worlds, attempt to immerse the player or user in that world through the provision of sensations that are faithful emulations of the sensations we experience in the real world. This is the belief and the goal. The reality, though, is somewhat different.
" I am engaged in a long-term study of presence generally, which was initially spurred by my interests, personal and professional, in computer games. This lecture presents some of my current thinking on the topic". Mark Grimshaw-Aagaard
