Pufendorf & Friends: "Democratic Alarm: Ambiguous Sounds"
What messages do sounds convey? How are sounds interpreted in different public contexts, by groups and individuals with different personal experiences, cultural expectations, emotional states, and levels of hearing loss? This Pufendorf & Friends after work event explores the concept of ambiguous sounds in the context of emergency scenarios and alarms, as alarm designers face considerable challenges in creating sonic actants that convey specific messages and encourage specific actions.
The audience will hear a series of ambiguous sounds performed live by a musician and through recordings. The range of responses and cognitive associations will be explored through discussions and interactive polls. After this, an informal mingle with drinks and snacks will be soundtracked by songs that have incorporated alarms and sirens in different ways, and we will consider the different and ambiguous ways that musicians have responded artistically to these emergency sounds.
Ultimately, this event aims to both celebrate the richness of human perception of sounds as well as the importance of taking it into consideration when designing alarms, emphasizing the power of dialogue and understanding in building a more democratic society. The "Democratic Alarm" event invites participants to listen, interpret, engage, and reconsider the ways in which we construct meaning from the sounds that surround us.
