Will immortal women own the future? Reflections on the representation of women in public art
Complex bureaucratic structures control the creation of public art. Today, public art is often abstract although more concrete works remain. The artist Linnéa Carlsson won the public procurement to portray Elma Danielsson, the first woman to be elected to the board of the Malmö branch of the Swedish Social Democratic Party (Malmö arbetarekommun). On 11 May Linnéa Carlsson visits Pufendorf & Friends for a conversation on art in the public space with Ida de Wit Sandström and Ulf Zander, two of the members in the the Pufendorf IAS Theme Public Art and the New Commons.
We will be discussing the following questions.
- Why has it taken so long for Malmö to get its first named and clothed statue of a woman?
- What does the process around ordering and decision making of public art look like?
- How do artists like Linnéa Carlsson navigate this terrain?
- How can they relate to and challenge older representations of women in the public space?
